Dr. Ali Gomaa is the Grand Mufti of Egypt. He was born on March 3rd, 1952 in Bani Suwaif. He studies at the Faculty of Commerce, and then after graduating, he completed another bachelor’s degree from Al-Azhar in 1979, followed by two masters and a PhD degree in 1988. Before becoming the Grand Mufti, he was Professor of Juristic Methodologies at Al-Azhar University. In addition, he reestablished the tradition of giving lessons at Al-Azhar mosque. His lessons were open to the public , and his teachings challenged the extremist approach to religious interpretation. A Sufi and globally-oriented, Ali Gomaa speaks English and French, and has publications and translations in both languages.
