Yousaf Raza Gillani (b 9 June 1952) is the 22nd prime minister of Pakistan and assumed that office in March 2008. He began his political career in 1978 as member of the Central Working Committee of the Pakistan Muslim League (PML). He served as Federal Minister for Housing and Works and later for Railways between 1985 and 1986. In 1988 he joined the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and became a Minister in the federal cabinet with the portfolios of Tourism and later Housing and Works till 1990. He was elected as Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan in 1993 and held this responsibility up to 1997. He was imprisoned in 2001 on charges of corruption and released in 2006 after spending nearly six years in jail.
