Shahbaz Bhatti (1968-2011) was the Federal Minister for Minorities under the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) government from 2008 until his death in 2011. He was an outspoken critic of Pakistan’s blasphemy laws and strongly supported their reform. A Christian himself, he served as the chairman of the All Pakistan Minorities Association prior to joining the PPP in 2002. He was assassinated in Islamabad on 2 March 2011 while leaving his house. Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for his murder for his stance on the blasphemy laws.
