Ayatollah Nasir Makarim Shirazi, (b. 1924, Shiraz) has been teaching for nearly three decades at the intermediate and higher level of studies (Kharij) in Usul al-Fiqh (Fundamentals of the Law) and Fiqh (Law) at the Theological Seminary in Qom. He has written many books in various fields of Islamic studies such as theology, Islamic awareness, jurisprudence, and the exegesis of the Quran. He was also very active in the early days that culminated in the Islamic revolution in Iran. During the pre-revolutionary period he was jailed several times and exiled at three separate occasions to Chabahar, Mahabad and Anarak. After the revolution he was appointed to the First Council of Representatives and played a pivotal role in writing the first constitution.
