Ayyub Axel Kohler (b.1938 in Stettin in present day Poland) is the chair of the Central Council of Muslims in Germany. Kohler fled the Nazi invazion to then communist East Germany with his family. In 1956, the Kohlers moved to what was then West Germany and Kohler finally landed in the southern German city of Freiburg as a geology student, a field in which he earned his PhD. There he first came into contact with students of Muslim faith and converted to Islam in 1963. From 1999 to 2004, Koher was also a member of FDP Parliamentary group.
