Ali Gomaa (b. 1952, Beni Sueif, Egypt) is a prominent Muslim scholar, who since 2003 has held the title of Grand Mufti of Egypt. He earned a B.S. in Commerce from Ain Shams University in Greater Cairo in 1973. In 1985 he earned a Masters in Sharia & Law and later a PhD in Theology (in 1988) from al-Azhar University. In 1979 he joined the faculty of Arabic & Islamic Studies at al-Azhar University. He is an member of the Theology Committee in High Council for Islamic Affairs, a member of the Fatwa Committee, and a member of the High Council for Islamic Affairs in Egypt.
