Fatwa Question or Essay Title:
On prohibiting female genital mutilation and female circumcision:

[Summary] Prohibiting female genital mutilation is in conformity with the purposes of creation and the interests of sharia (Islamic law). There is no hadith where female genital mutilation is required, and all hadith that mention it as favorable are weak and should not be considered as arguments. This act was a custom for hundreds of years because its harm was not known. However, nowadays, many doctors in the world and organizations including the World Health Organization which is a neutral and credible organization, have shown the harm and the consequences of this custom, so the prohibition of this act is the right thing to do.
