Commuters are not exempt from fasting during Ramadan, according to a fatwa from the Islamic authority in Abu Dhabi. The fatwa affects people commuting between Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, which requires a minimum drive of one hour each way and can take up to three hours depending on traffic and driving conditions. Travel that exempts a Muslim from praying also exempts the Muslim from fasting, the fatwa states, yet it is preferable to fast if the travel does not create hardship.
