A number of senior Muslim clerics in Iran have denounced violence against Muslims in China, following ethnic clashes that took place in the Chinese province of Xinjiang. Grand Ayatollahs Yousef Saanei and Hossein Nouri-Hamedani deplored the attacks against Chinese Muslims and called on the Tehran government to take measures to compel China to stop the murder of China's Muslim minority.

According to Chinese government figures, 184 people have been killed and about 1,700 injured. Two more Muslims were killed on Monday evening in the capital of Xinjiang, Urumqi.
