The Sheikh of Al Azhar at a recent press conference
The Grand Sheikh of Al Azhar Institute, Dr Ahmad el Tayeb, is pressing for speedy transition away from military rule and towards a democratic civil socity with free and fair elections in the next 6 months. He also called for the establishment of a council of the scholars and leaders in Islamic Shariah that would be responsible for electing the future Sheikh of Al Azhar, instead of appointing him. The council would also be responsible for determining a restricted tenure for the position, so that would no longer be held for life.
During the press conference, the Sheikh highlighted the importance of placing future economic development in the hands of those who are educated in the area and have significant experience, so that the economy can become independent and self-sustaining, rather than one that is wasteful. He stressed the importance of reducing economic inequalities between Egyptian citizens and increasing employment opportunities.
He also clarified the importance of having a knowledgeable and intellectual media, that follow the values of the Egyptian nation. He stated that is the historical right of Egypt to return to its role as a leader in the Arab and Islamic world and that the media should reflect the values, integrity, and interests of the Egyptian people and should not be a tool for secret political ploys that would only harm the citizens of the country.
He also discussed the need for instituting laws that would make all forms of torture, both physical and mental, a crime, with a focus on police and other security forces. He stressed the sanctity of the human and the individual, as well as establishing a respect for citizens by the government.
He called for the beginning of a new age that would follow the values set forth by the heavenly religions, starting with "the importance of knowledge [education/research] and justice and freedom that has built civilization, destroyed ignorance, and ended tyranny."

طالب فضيلة الإمام الأكبر د. أحمد الطيب، شيخ الجامع الأزهر بسرعة الانتقال إلى الحكم المدني المنتخب انتخابًا نزيهًا حرًّا خلال الأشهر الستة التي حدَّدها المجلس الأعلى للقوات المسلَّحة، وتشكيل هيئة من كبار العلماء والباحثين في الشريعة الإسلامية، تتولَّى ترشيح شيخ الأزهر، عن طريق الانتخابات بدلاً من التعيين، وتحديد مدة زمنية واحدة له حتى لا تكون مطلقة.
وشدَّد فضيلته- خلال مؤتمر صحفي، ظهر اليوم، بمقر المشيخة- على أهمية وضع اقتصادنا في المرحلة المقبلة في أيدي خبراء يجمعون بين العلم والخبرة والنزاهة؛ ليكون اقتصادًا منتجًا مستقلاًّ، وليس اقتصادًا تابعًا مستهلكًا، تستحوذ على خيراته قلة، ويُحرم من ثماره الأكثرون، موضحًا أهمية التطلع إلى اقتصاد تضيق فيه الفوارق بين المواطنين وتتكافؤ فيه الفرص؛ بحيث لا تموت فيه قلة من تخمة، ولا كثرة من جوع.
وأوضح أهمية وضع الإعلام في أيدي المثقفين الحقيقيين، الذين يرعون حرمة ثقافة الأمة وقيمها، وحق مصر التاريخي في أن تستعيد دورها الرائد في محيطها العربي والإسلامي؛ بحيث يلتزم الإعلام بأن يكون معربًا عن قيم المجتمع وأخلاقياته ومصالحه، وألا يكون صدى لسياسات إعلامية خفية تضرُّ بالوطن ومصالح المواطنين.
وأكد ضرورة سن قوانين صارمة تجرِّم التعذيب والإيذاء البدني والمعنوي والاعتداء على حرمة المواطن بأي شكل من الأشكال؛ لأن حرمة الإنسان من أعظم الحرمات في الدين والشرائع وكل الحضارات الإنسانية، وأهمية فرض ثقافة احترام المواطن، أيًّا كان مركزه لدى أجهزة الأمن وسائر أجهزة الدولة.
ودعا إلى البدء في إرساء دعائم عهد جديد تراعى فيه القيم العليا التي أقرتها الأديان السماوية، وحضارتنا الشرقية، وفي مقدمتها "قيمة العلم الذي هو عماد تقدم الأمم، والعدل الذي هو أساس الملك، والحرية التي تفجِّر الطاقات، وتبني الحضارات، وتكسر قيود الجهل والقهر، والاستبداد الذي يقتل الملكات، ويغري بالنفاق، ويزرع الخوف والتردد، ويرسِّخ مشاعر الجبن والأنانية، وكلها أدواء وأمراض ومصارع تهدم الفرد والمجتمع، وتدمر الأمم والحضارات".
