The aqiqa is a ceremony performed on the 7th day after the birth of a child. According to Prophetic sunna, the baby's head is shaved and an animal is sacrificed - two sheep for a boy and one for a girl. Sometimes it's also a naming ceremony (though some Muslims take the interpretation that the baby should be named at birth), but different cultures have adapted it for their purposes.
