Amir al-Muminin

Definition:
This phrase literally means "Commander of the Faithful." The title was first used by the second Caliph, Umar ibn al-Khattab, and was thereafter adopted by numerous Muslim polities until today. Use of the title waned after the thirteenth-century Mongol invasions, and Ottoman sultans rarely invoked it. West African Muslim communities employed the term through the early nineteenth century.
