The term Amir traditionally refers to a military commander, leader, governor or prince. Historically, it has been used as a title for Caliphs, as in "Amir al-Muminin" ("Commander of the Faithful"). In modern times, the title denotes membership in the ruling families of the many monarchs governing Muslim countries (i.e., Saudi Arabia, Gulf countries, Brunei).
