Adat refers to a known, common or accepted practice in a specific local. The role of adat or urf in Islamic jurisprudence is contested; though not considered a fundamental source of Islamic jurisprudence, scholars have relied on accepted norms to determine rulings on issues such as mannerism, dress and dowry.
