Abdul Moneim al-Shahat on democracy and decentralization of power

Abdul Moneim al-Shahat, the spokesman of al-Da’wa al-Salafiya (“The Salafist Call”), said in a statement that was broadcasted on Youtube that democracy is Haram and Kufr (“forbidden and blasphemy”). Al-Shahat said at more than one event that, “We have built an Islamic model in Egypt and not democratic, because democracy contradicts Islam… our Islamic system is restricted with Shura, and Shura is restricted with Islamic Law, al-Sharr. Democracy does not have any of these things.” The Salafis, he added, will build an Islamic system in Egypt and not democratic one. Al-Shahat believes that as far as democracy does not have the Islamic Law as its reference point, then it is Haram.
