Transnational Influences

A relatively small country surrounded by larger neighbors and close to Europe’s Mediterranean coast, Tunisia feels the effects of events in the Middle East, Africa, and Europe in the economic, military, and political spheres.  The fluctuating stability of neighboring North African countries such as Libya, Algeria, and Mali have posed challenges to the new Tunisian government.  Meanwhile, the Tunisian diaspora communities in Europe and North America form an important part of the social and religious fabric of the nation, often providing a refuge for those groups or individuals banned or censored by the Tunisian government.
