Tomur Dawamat (1927-) is the Vice-chairman of 9th NPC Standing Committee. An Uygur from Toksun of Xinjiang Province, he joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in 1952 and later became the local leader from 1954 to 1964. He held high positions in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region Revolution Committee from 1968-1979 during which time he served as: Vice-chairman of Xinjiang Autonomous Regional People's Committee, (1964-1968), Secretary of CPC Xinjiang Autonomous Regional Committee, and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Autonomous Regional People's Congress. He then served as Vice-minister of State Nationalities Affairs Commission, (1979-1985); Deputy Secretary of CPC Xinjiang Autonomous Regional Committee, (1985-1996); Vice-chairman and Chairman of the Autonomous Regional People's Government, (1985-1994); and finally Vice-chairman of NPC Standing Committee since 1993. He is was a member of the 12th to 14th CPC Central Committees and member of Fifth NPC Standing Committee, and Vice-chairman of the Eighth NPC Standing Committee.
